The Sustainable Tourism Game aims to inspire kids and their families to practice sustainable tourism and develop decision-making skills in a fun, interactive environment. Players navigate tourist destinations connected by flight routes, each displaying price (green), carbon footprint (red), and time duration (blue). The goal is to travel from a starting point to a final destination while minimizing the carbon footprint within a set budget.
Game Setup
- Map and Components: Lay out the world map showing major airports connected by various flight routes. Each route displays three variables: price (green), carbon footprint (red), and time duration (blue).
- Starting Funds: Each player starts the game with $5000.
- Travel Log Table: Provide each player with a travel log table to record their journey. The table should have columns for flight route, cost, carbon footprint, time of flight, and cumulative totals for cost and carbon footprint.
- Event Cards: Shuffle the 30 event cards and place them face down to form a draw pile.
Objective
Travel from a designated starting airport to a final destination by planning routes that minimize the overall carbon footprint, within the constraints of a $5000 budget.
Game Play
- Turn Sequence:
- Select a Flight: Choose a flight route from your current airport, considering cost, carbon footprint, and time.
- Pay for the Flight: Deduct the cost of the flight from your funds.
- Move Your Pawn: Move your pawn to the new destination airport.
- Record Your Journey: Log the flight details in your travel log table.
- Draw an Event Card: Follow the instructions on the drawn card, which may affect your journey or resources.
- Overnight Stays:
- If any flight or consecutive flights in a single turn total more than 6 hours, pay $100 and record an overnight stay in your travel log.
Special Rules
- Color-Coded Information: Use the color codes on the map and flight cards for quick reference to price (green), carbon footprint (red), and flight time (blue).
- Managing Resources: Monitor your funds and carbon footprint carefully. If you run out of money, you cannot proceed until you can afford another flight.
- Event Cards Impact: These cards can alter your plan unexpectedly, mimicking real-life travel disruptions or opportunities.
Ending the Game
- The game concludes when the first player reaches the final destination.
- All players then tally their total carbon footprint and any unused funds.
- Players may use remaining funds to offset their carbon footprint at the rate of $1 per kg of CO2.
Winning the Game
- The winner is the player with the lowest net carbon footprint after any offsets purchased with remaining funds.
